MOA
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment that uses controlled cooling (cryolipolysis). Applicators cool a localised pocket of fat in the treated area to break down fat cells, which the body then clears gradually through its natural processes. It is intended to reduce a stubborn, localised pocket of fat rather than to achieve weight loss, and results vary between individuals.
CoolSculpting Treatment Summary
Number of Treatments
The time required for a CoolSculpting treatment will depend on the area being treated, and the number and type of applicator required.
Procedure Time
The time required for a CoolSculpting treatment will depend on the area being treated, and the number and type of applicator required.
Discomfort Level
The initial cooling can feel intense before the area becomes numb; some people have mild-to-moderate discomfort for a few days afterwards. Comfort varies between patients, and comfort measures are discussed with you.
Recovery Time
The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so patients can typically return to normal activities almost immediately. This varies between people and may be dependent on your treatment area.
Following the procedure, side effects including redness, swelling, paleness, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, skin sensitivity and numbness can persist for 1-3 weeks following, usually resolving gradually over time. Numbness can persist for up to several weeks. A sensation of fullness in the back of the throat may occur after submental treatment (double chin area). Rare side effects such as paradoxical hyperplasia, late-onset pain, severe pain, freeze burn, vasovagal symptoms, subcutaneous induration, hyperpigmentation and hernia can occur.
When Will I See Results?
Changes develop gradually — often noticeable from around 6-8 weeks, with further change over about 3 months. Results vary between individuals.
Duration of Results
Once treated, the fat cells cleared from the treatment area are permanently removed. However, with weight gain, remaining fat cells can enlarge and new fat cells may develop. The longevity of results therefore depends on factors including lifestyle and the maintenance of a relatively stable body weight and composition. Results and their longevity vary between individuals. CoolSculpting is not intended for weight loss.
Resumption of Usual Activities
Most people return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
Aftercare
A balanced diet and active lifestyle help support longer-term results. Aftercare guidance is provided at your appointment and tailored to your treatment.
CoolSculpting General Information
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to target a stubborn, localised pocket of fat that has not responded to diet and exercise. Applicators cool the area so that fat cells are broken down and gradually cleared by the body over the following weeks. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
How to Choose Your CoolSculpting Treatment Provider
Choosing where to have CoolSculpting is an important decision. When comparing providers, it can help to consider:
- Consider your provider’s qualifications, education and experience in non-surgical body sculpting treatments, as well as whether appropriate medical oversight is provided by a qualified medical practitioner with relevant experience in this area
- Whether you receive a genuine consultation and individual assessment before any treatment
- Whether the benefits, limitations, risks and alternatives are explained clearly, so you can make an informed decision
- Whether the area to be treated and your suitability are assessed beforehand, including realistic expectations of what the treatment can and cannot achieve
- Whether you are given time to consider your options, without pressure to proceed
Take your time, ask questions, and consider seeking more than one opinion before going ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How does CoolSculpting work?
During a CoolSculpting treatment, a protective gel pad is first applied to help protect the skin during treatment. The CoolSculpting device applicator is applied directly over the gel pad and slowly cools the fat cells in the treatment area to around -8°C to 4°C. Temperature sensors monitor the skin’s temperature throughout the treatment and automatically shut down the CoolSculpting device if unusual temperature changes are detected to help prevent injury to the skin.
The applicator will remain on the skin for an entire treatment cycle, typically 35–45 minutes, but some applicators have a 75-minute treatment cycle. During this time, many patients will relax or read a book. Smaller devices like smartphones or iPads can be used during treatment. Care must be taken not to move around too much during treatment, as this may dislodge the applicator from the treatment area.
Immediately after the applicator is removed, the area is massaged for 2 minutes to help break up crystallised fat cells and re-warm the tissue. The treated fat cells are then gradually removed over the following weeks to months by the body’s lymphatic system and metabolic excretion processes.
After your CoolSculpting treatment, we will rebook you for a review in 8–12 weeks to assess your results.
Is CoolSculpting painful?
Initially, when the applicator is placed on the skin, mild suction/pulling can be felt alongside intense cold for the first 5-10 minutes before the area becomes numb. After the applicator is removed, a 2 minute post-treatment massage is performed to help break up the fat pocket and assist in re-warming the tissue; this is essential for treatment efficacy but can be mild to moderately uncomfortable.
Transient numbness and sensation changes to the treated area can be experienced post-treatment. For most people, this subsides within 1-3 weeks post treatment. Occasionally, this can persist for several weeks but is usually self-resolving. Some people may experience mild to moderate discomfort for a few days after treatment, primarily in the event of bruising. Late onset or severe pain is rare and usually self-resolving.
Am I a suitable candidate for CoolSculpting?
In general, suitable candidates are healthy adults who are close to their ideal body weight and want to reduce stubborn, pinchable pockets of superficial fat that do not go away with diet and exercise.
An in-person consultation is required to assess your suitability for treatment.
CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss treatment and is not suitable for everyone. Your suitability for treatment and realistic expectations will be assessed during your consultation.
It is important that you advise our clinical team of your medical history, including any past or present medical conditions or diseases, including autoimmune conditions; medications; past or planned surgeries; and pregnancy or postnatal status.
Does CoolSculpting tighten loose skin?
CoolSculpting is not a skin-tightening treatment. Whilst CoolSculpting is not known to cause skin laxity or loosen skin, preexisting skin laxity should be taken into consideration prior to undergoing CoolSculpting.
Is CoolSculpting covered by private health funds?
As a cosmetic procedure, it is not generally covered by private health insurance or Medicare.
How long does the CoolSculpting procedure take?
This depends on the areas treated and the number of applicators used. On average CoolSculpting can last from around 35 minutes to a couple of hours per session.
When will I see results, and how long do they last?
Patients may start to see results at 6-8 weeks post treatment, with final results around 12 weeks following treatment. Your body will still continue to remove destroyed fat cells for up to 3-6 months after treatment.
