BroadBand Light (BBL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses a broad spectrum of light energy to treat a range of skin concerns.

BBL and Skin Ageing

Research from Stanford University has provided interesting evidence that the effects of BBL may extend beyond visible skin changes. In a human study, researchers examined gene-expression patterns associated with intrinsic ageing and photoageing before and after BBL treatment. More than 1,200 genes showed expression patterns that moved towards those seen in younger skin following BBL treatment.

These findings suggest that BBL may influence biological pathways associated with skin ageing at a cellular level, supporting the concept of skin rejuvenation and cellular renewal. The research also demonstrated changes in collagen organisation and elastosis, the accumulation of abnormal elastic tissue associated with the ageing skin. These effects contribute to improvements in the appearance and overall quality of skin, including texture and elasticity.

At Medaesthetics, BBL is used as part of an individualised approach to skin rejuvenation, with treatment parameters selected according to your skin characteristics, clinical indications and treatment goals.

MOA

BBL is a specialised medical-grade Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) platform. It delivers filtered pulses of light that are absorbed by targets in the skin — such as pigment (melanin) in sunspots and freckles, and haemoglobin in small blood vessels — and converted to heat. Different wavelength filters are selected for different concerns (for example, a filter that targets blood vessels for redness, or a shorter wavelength used for inflamed acne). The heat delivered to the deeper skin is also intended to prompt the skin’s own collagen response over a course of treatments.

BroadBand Light Treatment Summary

Number of Treatments

BBL is commonly performed as a course of treatments, with the number of sessions varying between individuals. During your initial consultation, your practitioner will assess your skin and discuss a personalised treatment plan based on your individual concerns and goals.

Procedure Time

A single appointment generally takes around 15–45 minutes, depending on the area treated.

Discomfort Level

Sensation varies between patients — most describe a mild-to-moderate warming or light “rubber-band flick” feeling. Comfort measures such as topical numbing cream and skin cooling can be used where appropriate, and pain management is discussed at your consultation.

Recovery Time

Downtime varies with the settings used: temporary redness and mild swelling can settle within a few hours to a day or two, and pigmented spots may temporarily darken and flake off over roughly five to seven days. Downtime may be prolonged in people with sensitive skin or those who do not follow post treatment instructions carefully.

Results

Some patients may notice a visible change following a single treatment, while a course of treatments may be recommended depending on the skin concerns being addressed.
Visible changes develop progressively and vary between individuals, depending on factors such as skin type, the concern being treated, treatment settings and the number of sessions.

Duration of Results

The duration of results varies between individuals and can be influenced by factors such as sun exposure, skincare and lifestyle. Results may be long-lasting for many patients but are not permanent, and maintenance treatments may be recommended over time to help maintain the desired outcome.

Resumption of Usual Activities

Most people can return to light daily activities immediately after treatment. Strenuous exercise should generally be avoided for 24–48 hours, and careful sun protection is important during the initial recovery period.

Aftercare

Aftercare

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, saunas and hot showers. Keep the skin cool and use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser as recommended by your practitioner.

For at least 7–14 days, minimise direct sun exposure and use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily. Avoid picking or exfoliating treated areas, particularly if pigmentation becomes temporarily darker or starts to flake.

Your practitioner will provide personalised aftercare based on your treatment and skin. If you experience unexpected, persistent or concerning symptoms, contact Medaesthetics for clinical advice.

BroadBand Light General Information

Process

BBL uses gentle, controlled light to target areas of pigmentation and redness in the skin. The light is converted into heat, helping to reduce the appearance of these concerns while leaving the surrounding skin largely unaffected.

Risks

Side effects following treatment are generally temporary. These may include redness and swelling, which usually settle within a few hours to a couple of days. Pigmented areas may temporarily become darker before gradually flaking or fading, typically over around five to seven days.

Less commonly, patients may experience prolonged redness or swelling, temporary changes in skin pigmentation or, rarely, a superficial burn or blistering.

Individual responses vary, and treatment risks can depend on factors such as skin type, treatment settings and the area being treated. Choosing an appropriately qualified and experienced treatment provider is an important part of minimising potential risks.

Preparation

People with very sun-damaged skin, or with darker skin types, may need their skin prepared for several weeks beforehand (for example with prescribed skincare and sun protection).

How to Choose Your BBL Treatment Provider

Choosing the right treatment provider is an important part of achieving safe and appropriate care. Consider the following:

  • Qualifications and experience: Ensure your treatment is performed by an appropriately qualified and experienced healthcare professional.
  • Individual assessment: Your provider should assess your skin, medical history and treatment goals before recommending treatment.
  • Clear information: You should be given realistic information about expected results, potential risks, side effects and alternative options.
  • Appropriate technology: Ask whether the equipment is suitable for your skin type and the concern being treated, and whether treatment settings are selected specifically for you.
  • Personalised care: Avoid providers who recommend the same treatment approach for everyone. Your treatment should be tailored to your individual needs.
  • Aftercare and support: A reputable provider should provide clear aftercare instructions and be available to address concerns following treatment.

At Medaesthetics, we believe every treatment should begin with a thorough consultation and an individualised assessment, so you can make an informed decision about whether treatment is appropriate for you.
