Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment Highlights

  • Advanced Laser Technology – We offer both picosecond and nanosecond laser technologies with multiple wavelengths.
  • Established Experience Since 2013 – Medaesthetics was one of the firat clinics in Western Australia to offer laser tattoo removal.
  • Medically Supervised Treatment – We approach tattoo removal as a medical laser procedure.

Laser tattoo and Permanent makeup removal is a specialised procedure that uses targeted laser energy to break tattoo pigment into smaller particles, which are gradually cleared by the body’s natural processes. The response depends on factors such as ink colour, pigment depth, tattoo age, skin type and the type of tattoo.

Medaesthetics began offering laser tattoo & Permanent Makeup removal in 2013 and is one of the first clinics in WA to offer this treatment. We are among the few clinics in Western Australia offering both picosecond and nanosecond laser systems with multiple wavelengths. This allows us to effectively treat different tattoo inks colours.

All Laser Tattoo Removal procedures are supervised by Dr Ehsan Jadoon.

Treatment Discomfort:

Laser procedure can cause a snapping, stinging or heat sensation, with discomfort varying according to the tattoo’s location, size, ink density and individual pain tolerance.

Longevity:

Cleared ink does not return.

Location:

Available at all MedAesthetics clinics.

Laser Tattoo Removal Procedure Information

Treatment Areas

Laser tattoo removal may be suitable for a range of tattoo types, depending on the ink colours, depth, skin type and individual assessment.

  • Body tattoos: A range of ink colours can be treated, with black and red pigments generally responding well.
  • Selected tattoo areas: Specific portions of a tattoo can be targeted where appropriate.
  • Cover-up preparation: Existing tattoos can be lightened to help prepare the area for a new tattoo.
  • Cosmetic tattoos and permanent make-up: Selected treatments may include lip liner, eyeliner, eyebrows and scalp micropigmentation. A test spot is performed first to assess the response and suitability.

Common Names

  • Cosmetic tattoo removal
  • Permanent make-up removal

MOA

Laser tattoo removal works through a process known as selective photothermolysis and photoacoustic disruption, in which carefully selected laser wavelengths deliver energy to tattoo pigments within the skin.

  • Targeting tattoo pigment: The laser emits short pulses of light at a wavelength selected to target particular ink colours. The pigment absorbs this energy, while appropriate settings help limit exposure of surrounding tissue.
  • Breaking down ink particles: Depending on the laser technology, the energy produces rapid heating and/or photoacoustic effects that fragment tattoo pigment into smaller particles.
  • Natural pigment clearance: Following treatment, the body’s immune system gradually processes and clears some of the fragmented pigment over time. This is why tattoo fading continues for weeks to months after each session.
  • Multiple treatments: Tattoo ink is deposited at varying depths and may contain several pigments. Repeated sessions are often required to progressively reduce the visible tattoo, with recovery intervals between treatments.
  • Picosecond and nanosecond technology: Picosecond lasers deliver pulses measured in trillionths of a second, while nanosecond lasers deliver pulses measured in billionths of a second. Both can be effective for selected tattoos, and the appropriate system depends on factors such as ink colour, composition, depth and skin type.

At Medaesthetics, access to both picosecond and nanosecond laser technologies with multiple wavelengths allows treatment selection to be tailored to individual tattoo characteristics.

Treatment outcomes vary.
Some tattoos respond more readily than others, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as ink colour, tattoo age, density, depth, location, skin type and previous treatment can influence the degree of clearance and the number of sessions required.

Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment Summary

Number of Treatments

Every tattoo responds differently; on average, black-ink tattoos need several sessions (commonly 5 to 15) at 6-to-8-week intervals. The likely number for your tattoo is estimated at your consultation.

Procedure Time

Each procedure usually takes about 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the tattoo.

Discomfort Level

Laser tattoo removal is not simply a cosmetic laser procedure. Incorrect settings or inadequate assessment can cause burns, blistering, pigment changes, scarring and other complications. A careful assessment of the tattoo, skin type, medical history and previous treatment is therefore important.

At Medaesthetics, treatment is delivered within a medically supervised clinical setting under Dr Jadoon’s supervision.

Managing Treatment Discomfort associated with Laser Tattoo & Permanent Makeup Removal

Laser tattoo removal can cause varying levels of discomfort depending on the tattoo’s location, size, ink density and individual pain tolerance. At Medaesthetics, several options may be considered to help improve comfort during treatment.

  • Extra-strength topical numbing cream: Applied to the treatment area before the procedure to help reduce skin sensitivity and discomfort.
  • Local anaesthetic injections: In selected cases, local anaesthetic may be injected into the treatment area to provide additional pain relief. Suitability depends on the treatment site and individual clinical assessment.
  • Inhaled analgesia (nitrous oxide): Where available and clinically appropriate, inhaled analgesia may help reduce discomfort and anxiety during the procedure.
  • Individualised comfort planning: The most appropriate approach depends on the tattoo being treated, the treatment area, medical history and individual needs. Not every option is suitable for every patient.

Beauty salons and non-medical laser providers do not have access to the same medical assessment, anaesthetic options or clinical support.

When choosing a provider, it is important to check the practitioner’s qualifications, experience, laser technology, safety protocols and ability to assess and manage complications.

Recovery Time

Recovery typically involves around 5 to 10 days of localised redness, with superficial blisters and scabs in some cases that usually heal within a few days.

Results

Tattoos are faded gradually over a course of sessions as the body clears the broken-down ink. Not all colours respond equally, complete clearance cannot be guaranteed, and results vary between individuals.

Duration of Results

Once tattoo ink has been cleared it does not return, though the degree of fading varies with ink colour, depth and the individual, and complete clearance cannot be guaranteed.

Resumption of Usual Activities

  • Work and daily activities: Most people can resume normal daily activities shortly after treatment, depending on the treatment area and skin response.
  • Exercise: Gentle activity may be resumed as tolerated. Avoid strenuous exercise if it causes excessive sweating, friction or discomfort around the treated area, particularly during the initial healing period.
  • Swimming and bathing: Avoid swimming pools, spas and soaking the treated area until the skin has healed, especially if blistering or an open wound is present.
  • Showering: Showering is generally acceptable, but avoid hot water, vigorous rubbing and direct pressure on the treated area.
  • Clothing and friction: Wear loose clothing over treated areas where possible to minimise rubbing and irritation.

Aftercare

Why Do People Choose Tattoo Removal?

People choose laser tattoo removal for a variety of personal, professional and aesthetic reasons. Common motivations include:

  • Changing personal preferences: A tattoo may no longer reflect an individual’s interests, identity or lifestyle.
  • Regret over a previous decision: Some people reconsider tattoos chosen when they were younger or in different circumstances.
  • Career or professional considerations: Individuals may wish to remove or reduce the visibility of tattoos for personal or professional reasons.
  • Relationship changes: Names, initials or symbols associated with a past relationship may no longer hold the same meaning.
  • Changes in appearance: A tattoo may have faded, blurred or changed over time, prompting a person to seek removal.
  • Preparing for a new tattoo: Some people choose to lighten an existing tattoo to allow for a cover-up or redesign.
  • Personal or cultural reasons: Changing beliefs, values or cultural preferences may influence the decision to remove a tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal can help reduce the appearance of unwanted tattoo pigment. The degree of clearance varies depending on the tattoo’s characteristics, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed. A clinical assessment helps determine the likely response to treatment and the options available.

Laser Tattoo Removal General Information

Black vs Coloured Tattoos

Not all colours respond equally. Black and red inks generally fade more effectively; green, blue and yellow are often more challenging. Different colours also sit at different depths — black sits deepest, blue/green in the mid-dermis, and red/orange closer to the surface — so different wavelengths are needed to target each colour and depth (1064nm for dark pigment, 694nm for blue/green, 532nm for red).

The Lasers We Use

MedAesthetics provides laser tattoo removal in Perth, performed by qualified clinical staff under medical supervision, using RevLite nano-second and Enlighten pico-second lasers — medical-grade platforms able to deliver several wavelengths to target a range of tattoo colours.

Non-Laser Removal Methods

Several non-laser methods have been used to remove or reduce the appearance of tattoos. These include surgical excision, dermabrasion, chemical removal techniques and tattoo removal creams. However, their effectiveness and cosmetic outcomes vary, and many methods carry a significant risk of skin damage or scarring.

Common non-laser methods and their limitations

  • Tattoo removal creams: These products generally cannot reach the tattoo pigment deposited in the deeper layers of the skin. There is no reliable evidence that over-the-counter tattoo removal creams can effectively remove permanent tattoos. Some may cause irritation, chemical burns or scarring.
  • Chemical tattoo removal: This involves applying chemicals intended to damage the skin and promote pigment removal during healing. Results are unpredictable, and complications may include burns, infection, changes in skin colour and permanent scarring.
  • Dermabrasion and salabrasion: These techniques remove or damage layers of skin to reduce the appearance of tattoo pigment. They can cause prolonged healing, textural changes, uneven pigmentation and noticeable scars.
  • Surgical excision: The tattooed skin is cut out and the wound is closed with sutures. This can be effective for selected small tattoos, but it leaves a surgical scar and is generally unsuitable for larger tattoos without more extensive procedures.

Why laser tattoo removal is commonly preferred

Laser treatment uses selected wavelengths and controlled energy to target tattoo pigment while limiting damage to surrounding skin. The body’s natural processes gradually clear the fragmented pigment over time. Although several sessions may be needed and complete removal cannot be guaranteed, laser treatment generally offers a more favourable balance between pigment reduction and cosmetic outcomes than many non-laser alternatives.

At Medaesthetics, we assess each tattoo individually and select an appropriate laser approach based on factors such as ink colour, depth, density, skin type and treatment history. We also discuss the expected number of sessions, potential risks and realistic outcomes before treatment.

Important: No tattoo removal method is entirely risk-free. Treatment should be selected following an appropriate clinical assessment, and unverified home remedies or chemical removal products should be avoided.

Risks

Generally these are transient and settle within a few days. They include skin irritation, temporary redness and swelling, minor burns (rare), hyperpigmentation in darker skin types (usually temporary) and hypopigmentation of the treated area (rare).

How to Choose Your Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment Provider

When comparing providers, consider the following:

  • Qualifications and medical supervision: Check the practitioner’s qualifications, experience and scope of practice. Ask who will perform your treatment and what medical support is available if complications arise.
  • Experience with tattoo removal: Look for a provider experienced in treating different tattoo colours, ink densities and skin types, including tattoos that have previously undergone unsuccessful removal attempts.
  • Appropriate laser technology: Different wavelengths and laser pulse durations target different tattoo pigments. Ask whether the provider has access to suitable technology for your tattoo and how the treatment approach will be selected.
  • Individual assessment: A responsible provider should assess your tattoo, skin type, medical history and previous treatments before recommending a treatment plan.
  • Safety and complication management: Ask about eye protection, infection-control procedures, skin cooling, treatment precautions and how complications such as burns, blistering, pigment changes or scarring would be managed.
  • Pain management options: Discuss the comfort measures available, including topical numbing cream and, where clinically appropriate, other forms of analgesia or anaesthesia.
  • Realistic expectations: Be cautious of guarantees of complete removal or claims that every tattoo can be removed without scarring. The response depends on the tattoo and individual skin characteristics.
  • Transparent pricing and aftercare: Request a clear explanation of the cost per session, likely treatment course, expected recovery and follow-up arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Can any colour be removed?

Not all colours respond equally. Black and red inks generally fade more effectively, along with some brown, purple, orange, pink and occasionally yellow; green and blue are less responsive but can often be faded to allow a cover-up. Different colours sit at different depths and need different wavelengths (1064nm for dark pigment, 694nm for blue/green, 532nm for red).

How many sessions are needed?

Every tattoo responds differently, depending on factors such as skin colour, the age of the tattoo, ink colour and depth, the size and concentration of ink, and your immune system. On average, black-ink tattoos need several sessions (commonly 5 to 15) over several months. At your consultation we estimate the likely number of sessions for your tattoo.

How often can I return for treatment?

Fading depends on your immune system and is gradual. We recommend waiting at least six to eight weeks between sessions.

Can I have just a portion of a tattoo treated?

Laser tattoo removal can often target selected areas of a tattoo; suitability and results depend on the ink colour, depth and location.

I have permanent make-up (lip liner, eyeliner, eyebrows). Can it be treated?

This is one of the more commonly performed laser tattoo removal treatments at MedAesthetics. There is a small risk that some cosmetic inks with metallic bases can darken when treated; if this occurs it can take several sessions to address, so a test spot is always done first.

Can I lighten a tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes — depending on the colour, a few sessions can lighten the ink before a cover-up tattoo is applied.

Will I blister and scab afterwards?

Superficial blisters and scabs can be normal after treatment and usually heal within a few days.

Does insurance cover it?

Health insurance does not generally cover laser tattoo removal.

I got my tattoo recently — can it be removed now?

Please wait at least six weeks after a tattoo has been applied before starting removal.

Are all tattoo removal lasers the same?

No. Tattoo removal lasers vary considerably in quality, precision, reliability and performance. Some lower-cost devices may offer less consistent energy delivery or fewer wavelength options, potentially affecting treatment effectiveness and safety.

At Medaesthetics, we use top-of-the-line laser systems from the United States and Europe, offering both picosecond and nanosecond technologies with multiple wavelengths. Combined with clinical assessment and medical supervision, this allows us to tailor treatment to different tattoo inks and individual skin types.

When choosing a provider, consider the quality and suitability of the laser equipment, the practitioner’s experience, safety protocols and ability to manage complications—not just the price per session.

Why avoid other tattoo removal methods?

As mentioned earlier, non-laser methods are often ineffective and carry a high complication risk. Acid or chemical removal chemically burns skin to the depth of the tattoo and typically causes scarring; dermabrasion removes layers of skin and can also result in scarring. Surgical excision removes and grafts skin, which, again, can result in scarring.
