Hormonal Pigmentation (Melasma) Treatment Perth

Melasma, also known as hormonal pigmentation, is a common pigmentary condition that often appears as diffuse or patchy darkening on areas such as the upper lip, cheeks and forehead. It is more frequently seen in women, though men can also develop this condition. At MedAesthetics, we regularly see patients seeking support for hormonally driven pigmentation concerns.

Factors that may influence or aggravate melasma can include:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Sun exposure and UV radiation
  • Heat and inflammation
  • Certain cosmetic or skin treatments that irritate the skin
  • Genetics / family history

In general, anything that overheats, inflames, or sensitises the skin may contribute to visible darkening in people prone to melasma.

At MedAesthetics, we approach melasma and hormonal pigmentation using a combination-treatment model. This means working with more than one strategy to help manage the appearance of pigmentation in a gradual, medically supervised way. As with any skin treatment there are risks, so treatment is carefully selected and monitored.

Careful patient selection is the key when advising any skin treatment. Hormonal pigmentation should be treated by skin therapists working under direct medical supervision. — Dr Ehsan Jadoon

At MedAesthetics, every melasma management plan is customised to the individual’s skin type, depth of pigmentation, and budget. Your skin is assessed using advanced diagnostic imaging to understand the pattern and depth of pigment before any treatment is recommended.

Individual results vary, and all cosmetic procedures carry risks and possible side effects — these are discussed with you at your consultation. Treatment at MedAesthetics is overseen by Dr Ehsan Jadoon (MED0001586460) — Registered Medical Practitioner (general registration).

FAQs

What Is the best treatment for melasma?

There is no single “best” treatment for every person. Management is highly individual and depends on skin type, medical history, depth of pigmentation and lifestyle.

Generally, a supportive plan may include:

  • Avoiding known triggers, especially unnecessary UV exposure
  • Daily use of appropriate skincare products as prescribed by your clinician
  • Medically supervised in-clinic treatments such as peels or certain laser modalities chosen specifically for pigmentation

Is melasma easy to treat?

Melasma and other forms of hormonal pigmentation can be persistent and can return, even after improvement. Many patients have tried multiple products or treatments before seeking medical guidance.

There is currently no guaranteed cure in most cases. The goal of treatment is usually to help minimise the visible appearance of pigmentation and support long-term pigment control.

Because UV exposure is one of the most significant triggers, sun protection is essential for anyone prone to melasma. General recommendations often include:

  • Wearing a daily broad-spectrum SPF (minimum SPF30), and reapplying regularly when outdoors
  • Wearing hats and sun-protective clothing
  • Minimising unnecessary direct sun exposure

Is melasma treatable with IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is generally not considered first-line for melasma and, in some cases, may worsen the appearance of hormonally driven pigmentation if used inappropriately. This is why melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) should be managed by experienced clinicians who understand which energy-based devices are suitable and which are not.

How is melasma managed at MedAesthetics?

At MedAesthetics, melasma and PIH are managed under the supervision of our medical team. A personalised plan is developed for each patient, which may include:

  • Assessment of triggers and skin history
  • A structured at-home skincare program
  • In-clinic treatments spaced and sequenced appropriately
  • Guidance on sun behaviour and maintenance

Some people see a gradual improvement in the appearance of pigmentation over time when they follow a consistent plan. Others may need ongoing or staged treatment options to help maintain results.

In cases where pigmentation is more resistant, additional treatment options may be discussed with the clinician.
